The Kansas City Chiefs take their high octane offense to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday 12/23/18 at the CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington.
The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a heartbreak after they blew a 14-point lead late in the fourth quarter of their last games against the Los Angeles Chargers. L.A. came back and stole the win with a game winning two point conversion that has prolonged Kansas City’s coronation as AFC West division champions.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is having a sensational season. Mahomes has completed 67.1% of his passes and has thrown for a total of 4,543 yards with 45 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on the season. Tyreek Hill has caught a total of 1,304 yards with 11 touchdowns while Travis Kelce has 10 touchdowns and a total of 1220 receiving yards on the season.
Like the Chiefs, the Seattle Seahawks also had to extend their wait. No, the Seahawks aren’t fighting for a division title, they are gunning for a playoff spot. Seattle was handed down a franchise record 148 penalty yards during their last game against San Francisco and that proved to be costly as the 49ers downed the Seahawks 26-23 in overtime at the Levi’s Stadium. Seattle can finally clinch a spot in the postseason with a win over the Chiefs on Sunday.
Russell Wilson has thrown for a total of 3,025 passing yards with 31 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Chris Carson leads Seattle with 913 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns. Tyler Lockett has 800 receiving yards with 9 touchdown passes caught while Doug Baldwin has caught for 465 yards with four touchdown receptions.
Kansas City is 15-4 SU in their last 19 games played. The Chiefs are 6-2 SU in their last 8 games on the road. Seattle is 4-1 SU in their last five games played. The Seahawks are 16-7 SU in their last 23 games at home. Head to head, the Chiefs are 19-6 SU in their last 25 games against the Seahawks. Kansas City is also 6-3 SU in their last nine road games against Seattle.
I think this game can go either way and it could very well boil down to who takes control of the game. If Mahomes and the Chiefs move the ball well early and put quick points on the board, they will force Seattle to throw the ball in the air. If that happens, the Chiefs have a good shot to win this game. But if the Seahawks can force their ground game by pounding away and setting up their play action pass, then it is going to be a different scenario especially if the Chiefs aren’t able to move the ball.
After winning nine out of their first ten games, the Chiefs have just been 2-2 with wins over the Raiders and Ravens and losses to the two Los Angeles teams in the Chargers and Rams. Their two victories in their last four games have been by a combined total margin of only 10 points. But looking at the other side of the coin, the Chiefs’ three losses this season have come by a combined losing margin of only seven points and against the elite teams this season.
Kansas City’s last four games has been decided by three points or fewer and they’ve lost two of those games. The Seahawks were a letdown against the 49ers but they need this game more than the Chiefs because while Kansas City is already assure of a playoff spot, Seattle isn’t. Factor in the fact that the Chiefs have done poorly against the spread in the last month and it’s tough to win in Seattle. I’ll take my chance on the underdogs. We’re picking the Seattle Seahawks to beat the Kansas City Chiefs on 12/23/18.
The Chiefs are 0-4-1 ATS in their last five games played. Kansas City is 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight games on the road. The Seahawks are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games played. Seattle is also 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games played at home. Head to head, the Chiefs are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games against the Seahawks. Kansas City is also 6-3 ATS in their last nine games on the road against Seattle.
Since 2008, the Seahawks are 18-5 ATS as home underdogs. Seattle is also an impressive 24-6-4 ATS in their last 34 night games. In 2018, the Seahawks are 4-1-1 ATS in six games as underdogs winning their lone game as home underdog to the L.A. Rams. The trend favors Seattle. Prediction: Seahawks +3
