This isn’t your typical sportsbook. In fact, its bookmaking status only came to be within the last five years.
Back in 2000, Betfair launched as a betting exchange, and it wasn’t until 2012 that it added a traditional sportsbook to its website providing customers with the option of using the exchange or staking bets through a traditional bookie.
We’ll get into the intricacies of the sportsbook vs. exchange features and benefits in just a bit but, we’ll just mention that Betfair is the largest betting exchange on the internet today with four million customers and over one million of those who are active on a regular basis. This bookie turns over more than £50 million a week from their international clientele.
The exchange concept established Betfair as a middleman between bettors that are essentially betting against each other. The site accepts the stakes, takes a cut for their commission, and then issues the winnings to the appropriate party.
Let’s go back to the beginning, though. In 2000, Andrew Black and Edward Wray launched Betfair through offices in West London. Shortly after that, both men received the Ernst and Young Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year award.
Additionally, just three years from its inception, their company was one of 50 recipients of the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in the “Innovation” category. In 2008 they received yet another Queen’s Award for Enterprise but, this time it was for “International Trade.” This second award recognized Betfair for its accomplishment of acquiring nearly 50% of its new customers from outside the UK.
Betfair has also made several acquisitions throughout its relatively short existence.
In 2005, it purchased PokerChamps.com, an online poker site, and also completed a deal with the Tasmanian government to license Betfair Australia in the state. The Australian registration was the second non-UK license awarded to Betfair after its Malta agreement, and then Austria and Germany also followed.
The success that Betfair enjoyed continued to grow rapidly and, in 2008, it started to pay things forward through Cash 4 Clubs.
Cash 4 Clubs is a grant-based program in the UK through a sports funding scheme supported by SportsAid and funded by Betfair and now by Paddy Power Betfair. It gives community sports clubs a way to get help for their club or their team through grants that will pay to improve facilities, purchase new equipment, or even gain coaching qualifications.
Cash 4 Clubs has assisted nearly 400 community sports clubs across the UK through £300,000 in combined grant payments.
There’s a lot of positive news and feedback associated with Betfair, but there have been a few issues that have also arisen.
In 2011, Betfair covered up the fact that some of its customer data, including payment card details, were stolen. It did inform the UK Serious Organised Crime Agency, the Australian Federal Police and German law enforcement authorities, the international regulators, and the Royal Bank of Scotland, that accepted their card payments. It did not, however, inform its customers. The whole matter was kept as quiet as possible, but then Betfair was called out, and rightfully so, for its nondisclosure to the people who were affected the most.
Betfair has also been criticized for adding a premium charge that’s applied to payouts for its big winners. This new program was introduced back in 2008. If a bettor has paid less than 20% of their gross profits in commission and has placed at least 250 different market bets, they are required to pay an additional fee to make up for the commission difference.
Another notable incident that was particularly upsetting to over 200 Betfair customers involved a 2011 horse race at Leopardstown. More than £23 million in customer winnings were voided due to an issue with the odds and, to this date, some customers are still believed to be pursuing legal action.
These unfavorable incidents certainly don’t tarnish Betfair’s overall record. It is considered to be one of the best exchanges and bookmakers with great odds, fast payments, and overall good service.
In 2015, two of the heavyweights in the gambling industry combined forces to become an even bigger contender. Paddy Power and Betfair finalized a £5 billion merger resulting in Paddy Power Betfair, one of the largest online gambling businesses, with over 7,000 employees throughout all of its holdings.
The company is headquartered in Ireland and has a significant presence in the UK as well, but it is truly a global business.
The merger resulted in four key areas of operation:
1. Online: the businesses remained status quo by maintaining two separate Paddy Power and Betfair websites
2. Australia: the company has a 700 person payroll in Australia through sportsbet.com.au
3. Retail: 3,000 employees keep more than 600 Paddy Power betting shops open and active across the UK and Ireland, making it the largest retail operator in Ireland and the fifth largest in the UK.
4. United States: the US division is located in New Jersey and is based around TVG, a 35-state horseracing TV channel and pari-mutuel online betting network, as well as online casino and racing exchange.
Paddy Power shareholders retained 52% ownership with Betfair shareholders at 48%.
The new corporate website can now be found at http://www.paddypowerbetfair.com.
Betfair is essentially two sports betting services combined into one website as they’ve maintained their exchange that kicked off the entire brand but, has since, added a traditional sportsbook. It is now licensed to provide bookmaking services for its customers outside of the exchange and through a different structure than the original commission-based transactions.
The exchange was a way for Betfair to get into sports betting without initially needing bookmaker credentials or licensing. It also filled a need for this niche market. The site allowed punters to bet against each other whilst acting as the intermediary taking a commission on winnings that were paid out.
So why, then, would Betfair need to adapt to the norm and enter the world of traditional bookmaking?
Because there are a few things that tied its hands regarding just offering exchange wagers:
Betting through a bookmaker as opposed to an exchange opened up additional benefits:
So, when you’re looking at the two Betfair services, you’re reviewing exchange odds (exchange) as opposed to fixed odds (sportsbook).
Betfair is a well-respected name in the sports betting industry for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it provides the choice of using a traditional bookmaking service or a betting exchange.
Regarding the service itself, Betfair has a massive menu of both sports and non-sporting events all with competitive odds. There may be better value depending on enhanced odds selections and other price boosters, but there isn’t actually any particular sport that would be considered as a bad bet. Additionally, Betfair is a good choice for futures markets with a lower vig applied to these wagers.
The live in-play area is impressive not only in the number of opportunities but also for the video streaming service that the site provides for its registered players. Aside from UK and Irish horse racing, the service is basically free, but players may need to place a bet before they have access.
The payouts also earn this bookie high marks. They are not the absolute highest that can be found, but they’re very close. Top level football has a million pound payout limit, and tennis is set at £200,000. High rollers can attempt to take advantage of the relatively high £1 million daily payout cap.
Betfair isn’t the best with bonus programs, but it does have some decent offers, and the benefit of their promotions is that the free or match bets typically come with no rollover requirements, so they really are added value for customers. Playthroughs can subtract from the bottom line with every subsequent wager that’s required to be made.
Players acknowledge and appreciate that the site offers them a quick turnaround for deposits and withdrawals, so kudos on that aspect of financial transactions.
There are basically only two things that stand out when it comes to improvements that Betfair could embrace.
One specifically affects their high rollers. Whereas Betfair used to have an overall “winners are welcome” policy in its exchange, that changed in 2011 when Betfair raised a premium charge that applies to winners over a quarter million pounds (or the equivalent). The additional cost makes up for any commission paid under 20%. Some customers were charged as high as 60%, and the new policy certainly hasn’t sat well with loyal punters.
Secondly, although we mentioned in the section above that banking is relatively fast with Betfair as opposed to some other bookies, we need to note that some deposits, not withdrawals, come with fees attached. Credit cards that are the most popular method and accepted from players in a significant number of countries have a 1.5% fee for deposits. Competing sportsbooks in the UK don’t typically charge fees so we think Betfair could also absorb that expense in the interest of good player services.
Football is takes top billing as this site is a UK and Irish focused bookmaker and exchange. Football matches are plentiful, all over the globe, and can be sorted by competition or market type:
The football market menu opens up to:
Additionally, the sportsbook regularly promotes enhanced odds offers on football especially for Premier, Champions, and Europe League matches.
Football specials, coupons, and ACCA insurance also provide better value especially for sharp bettors who know what to look for to up their bottom line potential.
Here’s their entire sports menu:
Another promotion offered to Betfair players to provide them with better value on certain sports is the “price rush.” When a price rush goes into effect, it will increase a wager to higher odds courtesy of the Betfair exchange. For example, odds may be posted at 45/1 before the bet is placed but the slip may end up at something like 80/1 with a price rush.
Price rush is offered through single bets on football but also on American football, basketball, ice hockey, tennis, golf, darts, and horse racing, and also may be available for in-play wagers.
A few years ago, a lucky Betfair player staked a wager of just £10 on a tournament with 11 to one odds that jumped via the “price rush” to an incredible 250 to one resulting in an extra payout amount of £2,000!
The various promotional opportunities and enhanced odds will provide punters with some of the best value offered online, but Betfair has all around competitive odds anyway. Aside from football, there isn’t one sport that stands out as its consistent across the board in the fair betting pricing that is extended.
Before we get to the maximum, let’s start with the minimum. The smallest allowable wager is £1 for most bets, and Betfair’s information is listed in pounds, but they can be converted to Euros, US Dollars, Hong Kong Dollars, Australian Dollars, Danish Krone, or Swedish Krona.
You’ll note that there are some very generous maximum payout limits through Betfair. There are a few of the biggest bookmakers whose payouts rival these amounts, but not many.

Betfair’s promotional offers are location-specific so they will vary depending upon the residence of the customer.
The UK and Irish customers have a cashback welcome bonus available to them upon registration. This refund offer provides them with up to 25% back on their losses up to £250 and can be used within the first 30 days of registration.
For some customers outside of the UK, they may only currently see a match bonus offer applicable to arcade games. Welcome bonuses are not as big on Betfair as they are through some other UK bookmakers, but the site does offer some other promotions that more than make up for the difference
We made the previous mention of the Betfair Exchange program that entices sportsbook bettors to try out the exchange. New exchange bettors that risk £5 or more in the exchange can receive £5 back in cash if that ticket results in a loss.
There is a different exchange bet promotion going on as well that ups that amount to €20 if the bet is a losing one.
Free bets are awarded to players based upon their personalized betting profile that can be found in the “my bonuses” area. Free bets are time-sensitive and, the biggest benefit to these gifts is that they have no rollover requirements. We think that those play through mandates take initially good offers and end up in resulting player frustration. There’s so much confusion about the use of bonuses that have those rollover requirements attached, that players, especially newbies, many times think they have a good amount accumulated to cash out and may actually have nothing.
Credit Cards
Credit Cards are the most popular method, and Betfair specifies regions from which credit cards are typically readily accepted. It’s not a complete guarantee as any financial transactions are dependent on individual banking approval, but Betfair accepts credit card payments from registered customers in:

We already know that Betfair is much more than a sportsbook as it started out as an exchange only. They have other gambling options too, though.
The casino is filled with fun games, and we like the way their website designers set up the casino as games are broken down into features.
For example, there isn’t just a slots game category. There are slots, but then slots break down into slots with bonus rounds, free spins, 15-20 lines, etc… Some slots are in multiple categories, but this system makes it incredibly easy for players to find the type of game they’re most interested in trying out.
The casino has slots, table games, video poker, arcade games, and card games in addition to some great bonus offers, especially for new players. A current promotion offers new players 30 free spins over three consecutive days but, what we like about it, once again, is the no rollover requirement that we’ve found time and time again on Betfair.
Slot Games
New Slots – 63 total Top Gun Ice Run Full Moon Fortune Who Wants to be a Millionaire Firemen
Bonus Rounds – 15 total Thrill Seekers Santa Surprise Mr. Cashback Pink Panther Rocky
Free Spins – 36 total Sunset Beach Monty Python’s Spamalot Slot Fate Sisters Sherlock Mystery Goddess of Wisdom
25+ Lines – 48 total Cherry Love Little Britain Streak of Luck Cops and Bandits Football Carnival
15-20 Lines – 44 total Penguin Vacation Marilyn Monroe Lotto Madness Adventures in Wonderland Deal or No Deal
Dollar Ball – 11 total Silver Bullet Alien Hunter Golden Tour Highway Kings Captain’s Treasure
5-10 Lines – 21 total Vacation Station Deluxe Wall Street Fever Purple Rock Cinerama Funky Monkey
Multi – 21 total Bermuda Triangle Neon Life Haunted House Alchemist’s Lab Sultan’s Fortune
Jackpots Games
Jackpots include games from the other areas of the casino and will feature prizes of more than a million in payout.
In fact, Jackpot Giants is currently boasting a top prize of over £6,000,000.
Age of the Gods – £150,000+ Beach Life – £173,000+ Chests of Plenty – £350,000+
Table Games
26 games comprise this table area in the casino, so the quantity is good, but the majority of the games are roulette.
The live roulette table is promoted in this area and, at the time of writing, had just awarded a prize of £4,600.
The other games include:
The most popular games in this area are European Roulette and American Roulette starting at £1 per spin.
Wild Viking is a unique game that has a format similar to Roulette but uses a 52-card deck plus two Joker cards. Players try to select the correct combination of cards. Wild Viking is one of the few games that isn’t available as a free play option.
Card Games
The card game tables take up where the table games leave off and feature primarily blackjack games but also some poker and Baccarat too.
The card game line-up is 17 games in total, and the demo mode can be used to learn a game in this section. For a customer to start playing for real money, though, a minimum £10 deposit needs to be made to a player account, but new bettors may opt to deposit more as there is a 100% bonus match on the first deposit for an amount up to £100.
The tables in this area are:
The arcade game area features selections that are usually played for fun, but Betfair puts a twist on them and turns them into gambling options.
23 different games include some that are well known like Keno and some not as mainstream like Medusa’s Gaze.
The arcade consists of:
As you can tell, once again, there is overlap in different areas. UK Blackjack is located in card games and Arcade games as is Sic Bo.
Some of these arcade games are scratch card games, and all of them are basic, easy to learn gambling options that may appeal to beginners or just players looking to have some fun with games they already know. We will say that the arcade game area is probably the least visited area, though. If you compare interaction, the games report much less usage in this section, but it’s great that the site offers something for gamblers of all experience levels and tastes.
Video Poker
The Video Poker section isn’t significant in size, but it does contain some multi-hand variations of popular games to shake things up a bit for players who enjoy video poker.
16 games in total include:
Live Casino
At first glance, we thought the live casino was quite limited but, upon further investigation, we found it to be quite a big area with a lot of different varieties of each game.
We’ll take a look at Roulette with its 14 different live versions of this popular game. The minimum bet is $0.10, and the maximum is $500.00 on all tables. The assigned real, live person dealer is featured in the description and a live feed updates players on what’s happening throughout this particular area of the casino.
For anyone who prefers the live dealer format, Betfair will not disappoint. The 15 tables in the Roulette area is just the start. And, by the way, that’s just the generic Roulette area. There’s also a French Roulette section.
The rest of the live casino includes the following:
What we especially like about Betfair’s Live Casino is the welcome information that scrolls down on the right side of the casino lobby. Information and tips are included that new players, especially, would find to be helpful to them.
Vegas Slots
Vegas Slots opens up a whole new slots area with different games and a slightly different feel. Slot players love the themes and all of the bells and whistles that accompany slot play so they should be quite happy with an add-on casino that’s dedicated primarily to them.
This special casino has just under 100 games (98 to be exact) and is a mixture of some very well-known Las Vegas games and some all-around well known and universal themes.
Las Vegas players or anyone who has played slots for awhile will recognize some of the most popular games:
Other games are just recognizable and provide fun themes for this type of interactive play:
Some games in this Vegas Casino are also jackpot games, and they feature prizes of more than a million for those lucky winners:
Top Cat – currently posted jackpot of £1,177,000 Totem Lightning – currently posted jackpot of £886,000, as well as a new game for Betfair players Blue Diamond and Five Star also feature the same £886,000 progressive jackpot amount
Macau Casino
In a similar fashion as to the Las Vegas Casino, the Macau area features favorites from Asian casinos.
22 jackpot slots all promote the same rising progressive amount that’s currently listed at £880,740 at the time of this writing.
The games are all different but the jackpot potential is the same, so it’s just a matter of taste.
Some of the games include:
The Macau Casino also features a live dealer area with:
You may think we’re finally done listing out the gaming options but no, not yet. The also have a Bingo area with 81 Bingo games alone plus its own welcome bonus and other promotional programs.
Also, there is Pools Betting and an entire Virtual Sports area.
Is Betfair more than just a sportsbook? An unequivocal “yes”!
Betfair is an all around great online betting service that not only provides good quantity but good value with low margins and high odds.
When you compare the site to many of its direct competitors, it will come out on top in several areas of service, but there are a few bookmakers that provide even bigger action with £1.5 million football payouts and much greater caps on American sports. Books like bet365 and William Hill are some of the prominent names that feature the highest limits.
Betfair does outdo its sister site, Paddy Power, though. Paddy Power does offer a £1,000,000 payout on horse racing but has a £500,000 ceiling on football.
The live, in-play action through Betfair rivals its fellow bookmakers and the fact that it hosts live streaming puts this site on par with the big guys. Several books still aren’t up to speed with video feeds, so the site earns high marks for offering a comprehensive in-play area.
When it comes to deposits, though, aside from American servicing bookmakers like Bovada, most UK, Asian, Australian, and European operators don’t impose fees for financial transactions, especially when it comes to depositing funds. Betfair promotes credit cards as a preferred banking method, but the 1.5% charge should be eliminated to compete with the others.
Sides, totals, and moneyline wagers will put this sportsbook on par with most everyone else, but for futures betting, this is the place to go. Futures are one of the better opportunities through this bookmaker, and sharp bettors who have multiple sportsbook accounts would be wise to include Betfair amongst them.
For bonuses and promotions, players can do better elsewhere and, in many cases, not be limited to players from particular jurisdictions only.
Becoming a registered player is a unique proposition as it is the largest betting exchange on the internet but also gives customers the option of the traditional sportsbook.
Even though it’s a relatively new bookmaker, it has taken a lot of the best features of its competitors and combined them into an all-around good service with low margins and high odds that appeal to even the most professional punters around.
Its payout limits are substantial, and many of its players have also reaped the benefits of the price rush promotion that may increase their bottom line at any time.
We think the website is comprehensive and is designed well. It gives an impression of a busy bookmaker that takes a lot of action and has a lot of offer its clients.
