71st Primetime Emmy Awards Betting Odds and Predictions

Between the dates of June 1, 2018-May 31, 2019, television shows across the world have been competing for nominations and awards to be among the top in TV land, particularly with the Emmy Awards. Now that we’ve arrived into the month of September, the stage is set for the 71st annual Emmy Awards being held on Sunday, September 22. If you haven’t been paying attention, the past year of television has provided us a load of entertainment, and as a result, we have prop bets out in full-force for the upcoming award show.

The online betting site Bovada has been quick to pump out some betting options for the Emmy Awards, and it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the iconic Game of Thrones is leading the way with things. In total, the highly-rated show has pulled in a whopping 14 nominations and is nominated in literally all of the 10 major prop bets — their nomination tally lead all TV shows.

Instead of doing the normal thing and going through each show (which we will get to later), I want to start out by providing you a different way of betting when it comes to the Emmys.

Let’s go over the major prop bets and how you should bet them.

Do Not Bet on the Favorites. I Repeat, Do Not Bet on the Favorites

Before we go over how you should bet, I need to inform you that it is very important that you just keep this style of betting to these 10 prop bets:

  • Outstanding Drama Series
  • Outstanding Comedy Series
  • Outstanding Lead Actor — Drama
  • Outstanding Lead Actress — Drama
  • Outstanding Lead Actor — Comedy
  • Outstanding Lead Actress — Comedy
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor — Drama
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress — Drama
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor — Comedy
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress — Comedy

When you look at those categories, you see that every one has a clear favorite. For example, you have Sandra Oh for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series sitting at -275 odds, and then you another favorite such as Game of Thrones sitting at -400 to win Outstanding Drama Series. The strategy that you should implement is instead of taking the No. 1 favorite, take the next in line for profitability, and if you are going to take the top favorite, bet double what you were originally going to place. A good bet to place a wager on the next-up would be Killing Eve for Outstanding Drama Series at +500, those are the kinds of examples that I’m referring to.

Profitability Is the Name of the Game

Here is why you need to bet this way: It was done before with the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2018, and it was massively profitable. When you scout the 2019 version of the Emmys, it’s looking like the same strategy can be applied, and why do you ask?

Out of the 10 categories that we just went over during the 2018 Emmys, underdogs would win awards in seven. When you examine those seven underdogs, you see that options that were listed No. 2 in the odds would take up six of those underdog spots.

For example:

Atlanta was the favorite at -150 odds to win the Outstanding Comedy Series, but The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and their +135 second-place figure would steal the award. Speaking of Atlanta, you had Donald Glover as a huge favorite at -400 to land the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, but again, it would be the second-place top-dog Bill Hader and HBO’s Barry that would take the cake at +300 odds.

In 2018, if you would have bet $100 on each of the previously-mentioned 10 categories, you would have came away with a total of $2,300 in total profitability. Numbers don’t lie, this strategy has some massive value with it, so go ahead and implement this strategy in 2019. You’re sure to walk away with some cash.

However, even though the risk is worth it if you decide to place a wager, you may want to consider dismissing the strategy on the category for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. This is because of the dominance of Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep. From 2012-2017, she would win the award for six consecutive years, and she’s the odds-on favorite to be the victor again sitting at -350. You should also be aware that the Outstanding Comedy Series award would go to Veep for three straight years from 2015-17, and they’re currently the favorite to take it once again in 2019 at EVEN.

Let’s go over some of the shows that are among the favorites to land either the Outstanding Drama Series or Outstanding Comedy Series, and that are also involved with the rest of the slate of awards.
