The Bundesliga continues this weekend as defending champions Bayern Munich visits Bayer Leverkusen on June 6, 2020, at the BayArena. This match will be aired live via FS1 at 9:30 pm EST.
Bayern is looking to clinch an 8th consecutive Bundesliga title while the hosts are eyeing to enter the Champions League. Bayern Munich is currently seven points ahead of their closest pursuers and is looking to create more separation between their challengers. On the other hand, Leverkusen currently sits at 5th place in the Bundesliga table but they can still finish as high as second place at only four points behind Borussia Dortmund in the ladder.
Bayer Leverkusen is one of the hottest teams in the German top flight as it has won three out of their first four matches since the Bundesliga restarted play last May 16th. In their last assignment, Bayer Leverkusen hit the road and faced a stubborn SC Freiburg side. Leverkusen walked away with three points after Kai Havertz scored the winning goal in the 54th minute for the 1-0 victory.
Despite Freiburg taking more shots 9-7, Leverkusen controlled 68% of the possession time while earning a total of six corner kicks. They rank 5th in the Bundesliga in goals scored and goals allowed at 54 scored and 36 yielded this season. Leverkusen also has a total of 44 total assists this term.
Kai Havertz is Leverkusen’s top goalscorer with a total of 11 goals on the season. Kevin Volland is second with nine scores while Lucas Alario has found the back of the net six times this term. Volland leads the squad with a total of seven assists while Havertz has five assists as well. Karim Bellarabi has six assists while also scoring four goals for Bayer Leverkusen.
With the victory, Bayer Leverkusen is currently in 5th place in the Bundesliga table with a total of 56 points from 17 wins, 5 draws, and seven losses. They are tied with Borussia Monchengladbach in points earned but are ranked one spot down due to an inferior goal difference.
Bayern Munich moved closer to extending their record 30th Bundesliga title after blanking Fortuna Dusseldorf last Saturday in matchday 29 of Germany’s top flight. The big win put Bayern, who are chasing an 8th consecutive championship, seven points of second placer Borussia Dortmund with 67 points earned this season.
Robert Lewandowski ended a personal jinx when he found the back of the net twice against Dusseldorf, ending his five-match drought without a goal against Dusseldorf. Bayern controlled 69% of the possession time while getting a total of eight shots on goal and earning a total of seven corner kicks.
Lewandowski has scored a total of 29 goals this season while Serge Gnabry has also contributed double-digit goals with 11. Philippe Coutinho has 8 goals and 6 assists on the season. Thomas Muller leads the team with a total of 18 assists while also scoring seven goals. Bayern is the most prolific scoring team in the league with a total of 86 goals scored. They are also the best in the Bundesliga with a league-best 28 goals allowed.
Although the teams immediately behind them still have a mathematical chance, Bayern Munich has all but wrapped up the 2020 Bundesliga title. They are playing excellent football and don’t appear to be slowing down even with their 8th straight crown already in sight.
These two clubs have met a total of 31 times since 2006 and Bayern Munich has a huge edge with a 19-6-6 head to head edge. However, it was Leverkusen who won their reverse fixture last November with a score of 2-1.
Bayer Leverkusen has the 5th best home record in the Bundesliga with a total of 25 points earned. Leverkusen is 7-4-4 at their home stadium this term. On the other hand, the defending champions are the best road team in the league with a record of 10-2-2 away from home and a total of 32 points earned from those matches.
Leverkusen has their work cut out for them here as Lewandowski has scored four goals in his last four matches to lead the Bundesliga in goal-scoring with 29 this term. However, Lewandowski has not scored in his last four matches against Leverkusen but his form since the resumption of action suggests that he is going to end that slump in this match.
Bayern has six players who have scored goals in their last five matches. The defensive duo of Benjamin Pavard and Alfredo Davies each have found the back of the net twice since the break. With so many offensive weapons, Leverkusen will have a hard time stopping the champs from scoring goals in this match.
PREDICTION: BAYERN MUNICH -213
The hosts have scored at least once in their last 13 Bundesliga matches and have found the back of the net nine times since the resumption of play. These teams have scored at least a combined three goals in each of their last five head to head matchups. Bayern has been the best team in the league when it comes to scoring goals but with the way that Leverkusen has played since the break, I expect them to pick up at least one goal here. I think both teams score in this match.
