The Kansas City Chiefs completed an impressive comeback to defeat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 and win Super Bowl LIV over the weekend. The Chiefs were down 10-20 midway through the fourth quarter when Mahomes led his team to 21 unanswered points to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a 31-20 victory. Mahomes threw for a total of 286 yards with two touchdowns and rushed for one score as he earned Super Bowl LIV MVP honors.
Just hours after their triumph, the betting odds for 2021’s Super Bowl LV were released and Mahomes and company have emerged as the early favorites to win it all again next season. With their quarterback returning next year, the Chiefs are deserving favorites. Kansas City has plenty of talent on both sides of the field and with Andy Reid still in the sidelines, they are going to be tough to move from the top of the mountain.
Here are the early odds to win Super Bowl LV. These odds were taken from BetOnline as of 2/4/20:
The Super Bowl LIV winners Kansas City Chiefs are the favorites to repeat next season. Kansas City started slow, going 1-3 through four games which was their worst start since 2012. But after Patrick Mahomes returned from injury, the Chiefs clinched a franchise-best fourth straight AFC West title. They finished undefeated in their division and went on to host the AFC title game for only the second time in team history. Kansas City defeated Tennessee in the AFC Conference championship game and then upended the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LIV last weekend. With Patrick Mahomes back next season, they are the favorites to win it all again next year.
The Baltimore Ravens breezed through the regular season with the best record in the NFL. Baltimore led the league in scoring and they were the only team to score at least 20 points in every regular-season game this past season and the only team in the NFL to score in at least half of their total drives. Baltimore finished the regular season with 12 consecutive wins, a franchise record and they entered the playoffs for the second straight season. Lamar Jackson was named as unanimous NFL 2019 MVP after setting several records including most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season. Unfortunately, the best season in franchise history ended with a defeat to the Tennessee Titans in the divisional round.
San Francisco went from a 4-12 team in 2018 to the best team in the NFC Conference in 2019 with their 13-3 record. They opened the season with eight consecutive wins and finished with their best record since 2011 and the first winning season since 2013. The 49ers had the best rushing game and defense in the NFC. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was the betting favorite to win Super Bowl LIV MVP midway through the 4th quarter before Mahomes worked his magic again for the Chiefs.
The New England Patriots had a strong start to their 2019 campaign but as the season went farther, the Patriots’ offensive limitations were exposed. New England played one of its best defensive seasons in years but their lack of offensive weapons was the main reason they didn’t make it past round one of the 2019 NFL playoffs. The Patriots need an offensive upgrade this summer not just to win the Super Bowl but to retain the services of Tom Brady who is a free agent for the first time in his career.
New Orleans suffered an early setback when Drew Brees was out from Week 3-7 with a thumb injury. However, they went 5-0 during that period with backup Terry Bridgewater and the Saints proceeded to finish with a 13-3 record. They won the NFC South for the third consecutive season and this was the first time that New Orleans posted back to back seasons with at least 12 wins. The Saints lost to the Minnesota Vikings during the wild card round.
Lamar Jackson had a breakout year and the Ravens have been one of the league’s best defensive teams in the past decade. The 49ers came so close to winning it all, only to watch Mahomes weave his magic in the final 8:53 of Super Bowl LIV. The Patriots will be right there among the contenders if they can get Tom Brady back while the New Orleans Saints will be a solid contender with Drew Brees back and healthy. However, I like the current champions right now.
Patrick Mahomes established himself as the best quarterback in football right now. The Chiefs’ 10th overall pick in 2017 had his breakout year in 2018 and won the NFL MVP. A year later, Mahomes is a Super Bowl winner and he is the youngest player to win both the MVP and the Super Bowl. At only 25 years of age, the Chiefs are going to be a force for a long time with Mahomes calling the plays.
After the New England Patriots won the Vince Lombardi trophy in 2018, the Chiefs were the odds on favorite when the way too early Super Bowl 54 odds were published. Kansas City came up short in overtime in the 2019 AFC title game but came back one year later to win it all. The Chiefs came from behind to win both their playoff games and Mahomes had a 5-0 record in 2019 when trailing by double digits, the best in NFL history. It’s still too early to tell but after the 2019 NFL season, I think the Chiefs are going to be a force for years to come. No team has won back to back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots did so in 2003 and 2004. But if there is a team who can replicate that feat, it’s Patrick Mahomes’ team.
