When it comes to betting on a team-based esport, you want to find the perfect pick. You want a team that is reliable, consistent, exciting, and profitable. These are all ideal pieces to any team you want to choose.
However, due to the increased level of competition in League of Legends, it’s become harder and harder to find the perfect team, and this isn’t because there aren’t any good teams left. In fact, it’s the opposite. There are so many good teams nowadays that choosing the perfect one is quite hard to do.
Therefore, how do you choose the perfect team? What are the requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to do so? I’m going to be showing you everything you need to know and everything you didn’t know so that whenever it comes time, you’ll have the strongest pick available for the competitive scene.
Before you can make any assumptions about a team being a good or bad pick, you need to know the history behind the team. Some broad topics you’ll want to cover are as follows: what’s the main franchise backing the team? Who are their sponsors? Do they have any previous esports history?
The best example of this is choosing between a rookie team and a veteran team on the Split. Nine times out of ten, if a rookie team is entering the split, they’re not going to do as well as an experienced veteran team.
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, such as 100 Thieves, who destroyed the competitive scene when they were first introduced into the NA LCS. However, at the same time, another rookie team, OpTic Gaming, had a horrendous Split, largely due to the fact that they didn’t have the experience factor.
Another example is Team SoloMid, which has several franchises, such as Geico, HTC, and Gillette, backing the team. While it doesn’t show a whole ton, it does in fact show that they’re a strong enough team to get backing from major sponsors and will have the funds to make major moves throughout the Spring and Summer Split.
Therefore, by knowing the fundamentals of a League of Legends team, you can learn a great deal about what they’ll have in store for matches. You’ll know whether or not they have more experience on the field and if they have the funds necessary to make ambitious steps for the organization.
If you aren’t looking to invest time and effort into a rookie team, then you’ll definitely want to take a look at the past performance of the team you want to put your support behind because how a team did the previous year can tell you everything you need to know.
A team can have the perfect roster or have some of the strongest coaches in the game, but how they did in the last year’s Spring or Summer Split can be what determines the first few matches of the current Split.
The reason a team’s past performance is such an influential factor into how they’ll play in the current year is because a team works off of momentum. If they don’t have the momentum necessary to propel them to a strong start, then they’re most likely going to start off shaky, and this is the case for most low-placing teams.
When OpTic Gaming first came onto the scene, despite their high praise and predictions, they only placed ninth out of ten teams, results that were definitely lower than their expectations. Because of this, they didn’t have the momentum needed to propel themselves towards a strong start for the Split, and they ended up placing seventh in the 2018 Summer Split, only a measly two-place difference.
This is one of the most important pieces to determining whether or not a team is going to have a strong performance in the next Split. Essentially, the previous year’s performance for a team can be an indicator as to how they’ll play this year.
Of course, there’s always the exception. A team can use their poor performance to motivate themselves and work to place higher in the next year’s Split, and this has happened before throughout the history of League of Legends competitive play. However, most of the time, a past performance will reflect how the team is going to play the present Split, whether it’s for the better or for the worse.
Individual talent is a must for any team looking to make it far in a Spring or Summer Split. If you look at any team, they usually have one player that can be a key piece to their success. The main reason behind this is that one talented player can unite a team to play their best.
Considering the fact that every single role is important, having just one strong player can be the difference between a team winning and losing. This is the reason that teams such as Team SoloMid, Cloud9, and 100 Thieves have had such a strong presence on the Rift.
Team SoloMid has talents such as Bjergsen, who has gone head-to-head against Korean powerhouses, and the bot lane duo of Zven and Mithy, who were the dominant AD Carry and Support in the EU LCS. Along with that, their top laner, Hauntzer, has shown considerable results throughout the Split, meaning that he’s been a key player as well.
All four of these players have helped contribute to Team SoloMid’s continuous legacy in the NA LCS and have helped them craft a title as one of the best teams in the NA LCS from the very start of the League of Legends competitive scene.
However, a rawer example of this is South Korea Telecom. While they may not be the powerhouse they once were, from 2013 to 2017, they proved to be a force that no one dared to reckon with. This was largely due to the fact that their star player, Faker, had been known to single-handedly rock the entire Rift with his fast-paced playstyle and clutch plays.
Their legacy alone has proven time and time again that the talent of a player can go a long way because when it comes to the pressure moments — when everything is on the line — only the best of the best can survive, and for the case of South Korea Telecom, they had the best of the best.
Talent goes a long way when it comes to a team’s success. League of Legends is all about taking down your opponent in the early stages of the game and snowballing that lead. Talented individuals excel at doing that, but they also excel at doing other things inside the game.
Talented individuals — to name a few examples: Bjergsen, Febiven, and Faker — are able to read the game in a different way than other players. They can see what others cannot, and whenever their team needs to make something happen, these players can see whether it’s a good idea or not.
Furthermore, their ability to play the game can lend a big advantage when it comes to the big team fights that determine whether a team wins or loses. As I’ve mentioned before, the best of players are the ones who can last in the high-pressure situations.
Every team is going to go through some type of trial, and in order to become the best, they need to come out on top. Without having at least one strong talent on the team, it’s going to be basically impossible for them to make any moves.
There are plenty of strong teams out there, but when it comes down to it, there are only a few that really shine out of all of them. This means that there’s a ranking of strength between the teams, and you can usually tell based off of their records.
One way you can tell whether or not you should choose a team is by comparing them to the other teams. Does your team have a strong listing of players compared to the next few teams they’re going to be playing during the Regular Season?
Does your team have more experience on the NA LCS, EU LCS, or LCK than the opponents they will face? By comparing all of these aspects, you can usually get a taste of which team will come out on top in the end.
Despite trying to choose a strong team to bet on, you’re not always going to be able to choose the team you want because the League of Legends competitive scene is highly situational. Choosing a team depends on the situation you’re in.
By this, I mean that sometimes, specific teams play better than others in certain times. For example, in previous years, Team Liquid has been known to excel during the early stages of the Regular Season but fail to show up during crucial matches like those in the Playoffs or during tie-breakers.
Because of this, even if you back Team Liquid most of the time, when you’re looking to make profit, choosing the other team over your favorites could be what makes you the money that you want to make.
While all of these things I’ve mentioned beforehand may play a piece in choosing your ideal team, in the end, it comes down to what you prefer and the playstyles and tastes that you’ve acquired when watching League of Legends.
There are dozens of playstyles out there in League of Legends, and the number doesn’t shrink when you enter the competitive scenes such as the NA LCS, EU LCS, and LCK. That being said, you have a wide variety to choose from.
Do you want a more conservative team such as Cloud9 that prefers to let a slow but steady start help them reach the finish line, or do you want a team such as kt Rolster who likes to take their opponents by storm from the very second the match starts?
Do you prefer a team that has a roster of low-key but consistent players such as Team Vitality, or are you looking for a team that puts all their trust on one star-studded player while having teammates that are good but are meant to support the playstyle of one extremely talented individual such as Febiven on Clutch Gaming?
With so many teams and so many different styles of play, the opportunities are endless. Also, considering the fact that there are more than three regions to choose from, your betting career for League of Legends will never die.
That the League of Legends meta is constantly changing, so sometimes your tastes will have to adjust according to what the meta says. For example, with the gold funneling strategy that came about, teams that focused down one player tended to have more success than teams that preferred to split their resources evenly.
Choose your team according to what you like and what you want to see. Even if you’re backing a team that has been destroying the scene, if you don’t enjoy watching them, you won’t have the fun that can be experienced when it comes to betting on League of Legends.
Besides, every playstyle in League of Legends has its strengths, meaning that each team has an equal opportunity of winning. So, therefore, don’t be afraid to just go for it. Choosing a team to bet on is one of the most exciting parts of League of Legends, and letting your fears hold you back is the last thing you want to do.
When betting on esports, choosing a reliable team to bet on can be one of the most challenging pieces of excelling in the industry. What I mean by this is the fact that League of Legends has demands that aren’t usually seen in the sporting world.
Because of this, you usually want to look for a team that can answer the following questions: do they have past esports experience? Do they know what they’re doing? Are they rookies or veterans? Do they have individual talent? Can their team play well compared to others?
Knowing their past esports experience can give you insight on whether or not they can make it in such a demanding field. Rookies tend to have a harder time getting their feet wet, while veterans can do it with no problem.
This can also lead to them knowing whether or not they know what they’re doing. If a team is being backed by a major esports franchise such as Cloud9, Fnatic, or Team SoloMid, chances are they’re going to have a solid performance.
Individual talents also have a say in this as well. Most of the time, having someone who can play well and carry the team whenever the team can’t handle its load can prove helpful in several instances. Teams that have individual talents have proven to be teams that can stand their ground in the high-stakes situations.
The most important piece, though, to finding a team that can really excel at your standards is picking one that matches your tastes. If you’ve been watching League of Legends long enough, you’ll know the different playstyles that are present on the Rift.
They can play aggressive. They can play passive. They can play semi-aggressive or just wait for their opponents to make mistakes. The possibilities are endless. By choosing one that really suits your standards, you’re choosing a team that you can fully understand, and this is perhaps the most important part of a team.
If you don’t choose a team that fits your playstyle and tastes, you’re going to find yourself having a hard time enjoying what your team is doing, even if they’re having the success you want. Therefore, before you do anything, make sure that the team you’re following is one that you definitely would like to watch.
Choosing the perfect team to bet on for League of Legends is the first and most important step for any bettor looking to make money. By following all the steps, you’ll quickly find yourself matching with a team of your choice, and before you know it, the cash is going to start flowing into your wallet.
