The Indianapolis Colts play the New York Jets on Sunday 10/14/18 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey in Week 6 of the 2018 NFL season.
The Colts lost for the third consecutive time last week after dropping a 24-38 contest to the New England Patriots. Meanwhile, the Jets pulled off what was probably the biggest surprise of Week 5 when they not only defeated the Denver Broncos but they beat them convincingly at 34-16.
After back to back losses to Jacksonville and Cleveland, the New York Jets returned home last week to face the Denver Broncos. After being held scoreless in the opening quarter, the Jets took control of the game with a dynamic running game that netted them a total of 323 rushing yards for the game.
Veteran running back Isaiah Crowell almost single handedly ran the Broncos out of the building, accounting for 219 rushing yards on 15 carries. With that explosion, Crowell has now ran for 390 yards on the season, third in the NFL. Bilal Powell, who leads the Jets in carries per game, is also 18th in the league in rushing yards with 264.
Sam Darnold runs the show at quarterback for the jets. The rookie play caller has thrown for 1,066 passing yards with 7 scores and 6 interceptions. Darnold currently has a passer rating of 77.2%. However, the 21 year old 3rd pick of the 2018 NFL draft is coming off a good game against the Broncos where he threw for three touchdowns and just one interception.
The Colts will attempt to snap out of a three game losing streak against the Jets. Indianapolis lost to New England 38-24, the last time out and they are currently 1-4 on the season.
Quarterback Andrew Luck has carried much of the load for the Colts this season. Luck leads the NFL with 49 pass attempts per game. This includes a game where he threw 62 punches and two more games where he had at least 50 pass attempts. Luck is 163-245 on his passes for 1,491 yards with 12 touchdowns and 5 interceptions and a passer rating of 90.7%.
Tight end Eric Ebron has been a revelation for the Colts. The 25 year old has caught a total of 26 catches for 255 receiving yards with five scores through the first five weeks of the season. Jordan Wilkens leads the Colts with 175 rushing yards but a key absence in this game could be wide receiver T.Y. Hilton who missed the last game against the Patriots and did not participate in Monday’s light workout.
The Colts are 2-10 SU in their last 12 games and 1-5 SU in their last 6 games on the road. The Jest are 2-7 SU in their last 9 games but are 4-2 SU in their last six games against the Colts. The New York Jets have won five out of the last seven head to head meetings between these teams, including four out of the last five. The Jets have also taken two out of the last three meetings at the MetLife Stadium.
New York ran for 323 yards against the Denver Broncos last week while the Indianapolis Colts have allowed opponents to run for over 106 yards per game. With their two headed monster of Isaiah Crowell and Bilal Powell leading the way on the ground, the Jets should win this matchup on the ground.
Likewise, if their ground game continues to roll against the Colts, it should open up the passing lanes for rookie quarterback Sam Darnold who has shown that he can throw the ball deep with the presence of mind of a savvy veteran. We’re picking the New York Jets to beat the Indianapolis Colts on 10/14/18.
The Colts are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 when playing the Jets and 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 road games against the Jets. On the other hand, the Jets are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games at home, 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against the Colts and 4-2 ATS in their last six at home against Indiana.
Between Indianapolis’ over-reliance on Andrew Luck and their passing game and the Jets’ pair of excellent running backs leading the charge, I’ll lay my cash on the latter. The Colts have one of the worst defenses in the league. I think they can’t stop the Jets, especially on the ground. Prediction: Jets -2.5
The total has gone over in five out of the last seven games played by the Jets at their home field with an average total score of 47.71. The over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings between these teams and also 4-1 in the last five meetings between these two teams in New York.
The Jets have been hit and miss on offense this season. New York has scored a total of 82 points in their two victories but only an aggregate of 41 in their three losses. But if you take a closer look, two of their three losses came against some of the top defenses in the league this season in Jacksonville and Cleveland. Indianapolis isn’t an elite defense so I expect the points to pour in for the Jets. Prediction: Over 45
