The Detroit Pistons head to Mile High to take on the Denver Nuggets at the Ball Arena on Tuesday night.
Detroit is 3-15 SU on the season and they have the worst record in the entire NBA this season. The Pistons have lost seven straight games and are 1-9 SU in their last 10 games played. They will be without their best player Cade Cunningham once again on Tuesday night.
Denver is 10-6 SU on the campaign and they have the 2nd best record in the Northwest Division, one game behind the Utah Jazz ( who were playing the L.A. Clippers as of this writing ). The Nuggets are also without their best player Nikola Jokic. Jamal Murray also missed their last game and is listed as day-to-day.
This is the first meeting of the season between these two teams. The Nuggets beat the Pistons 110-105 in their most recent game played on January 25, 2022.
The Pistons lost to the Sacramento Kings the last time out 137-129. Rookie Jaden Ivey led the team with 24 points as the Pistons played without Cade Cunningham once again. Detroit’s best player has not suited up since November 11th.
Alec Burks added 16 points off the bench while Marvin Bagley III added 15 points against his former team. Bojan Bogdanovic added 21 points but despite their efforts, the Pistons lost for the 10th time in their last 11 games played.
Detroit is scoring just 109.4 points per game this season. The Pistons are also pulling down 43.2 rebounds per game this campaign. Meanwhile, the team is averaging only 21.0 assists per game. As stated earlier, Cunningham is out for this game as are Isaiah Stewart and Saddiq Bey.
The Pistons are in a tough spot here. Not only are they missing their best player, but they have also won just once in their last 11 games played. Detroit has also struggled to play on the road this season as they are winless in 10 away games so far this year.
The Nuggets faced the Dallas Mavericks in a two-game set last week without two of their top three scorers. Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray were out of commission for Denver as well as big man Aaron Gordon. Despite that, the Nuggets got a career-high 29 points from Bones Hyland while Michael Porter Jr. hit a big three-pointer down the stretch that helped the Nuggets win 98-97.
Bruce Brown added 12 points and 8 assists while veteran big man DeAndre Jordan had a massive game with 8 points and 17 rebounds in 34 minutes of action. Other than Hyland’s career-high 29, Denver mustered only 22 other bench points against the Mavs.
The Nuggets are scoring 113.9 points per game this season. Denver is also averaging 43.6 boards grabbed per contest and 27.5 assists per game. Jokic and Murray are still under health and safety protocols while Aaron Gordon and Ish Smith are listed out of this game.
Denver is looking to make a deep playoff run this season with Murray and Porter back after injury-riddled 2022 campaigns. The Nuggets have played well to start the year but currently, the team is hit with injuries and absences with guys like Hyland and MPJ stepping up, the Nuggets are still a formidable team.
The Pistons are 0-5 SU in their last five games played against the Nuggets. Detroit is also 0-5 SU in their last 5 games played in Denver.
Detroit Pistons SU trends:
Denver Nuggets SU trends:
The Pistons extended their losing streak to seven games last Sunday after losing to the Sacramento Kings 137-129. Detroit was very much in the game but they scored only 5 points in the final 5:27 of the 4th quarter, leading to another defeat.
Rookie Jaden Ivey played well in the absence of Cade Cunningham while the Detroit bench combined to score an impressive 55 points. However, with the Pistons unable to stop the Kings from scoring, they could not get the victory last Sunday.
With the loss, the Pistons have lost seven straight and they have won only one game in their last 10 assignments. Detroit will be without Cade Cunningham again in this game and I think it will be much harder to win against the much better Denver Nuggets.
The Nuggets went 1-1 in their two-game set against the Dallas Mavericks last week. Despite playing without Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon in their last game, the Nuggets were able to beat the Mavs 98-97.
Hyland is scoring 20.2 points per game in his last 6 games played and has made 45.7% of his three-pointers during that span. Michael Porter Jr. has scored only a total of 29 points in his last three games played but is averaging 16.3 PPG on the season.
Denver will be without Jokic once again but I expect Hyland to continue playing well on Tuesday night. I also think that MPJ will finally break out of his slump at home. There’s no question that the Pistons are playing hard and competing in each game. However, I think that the Nuggets have a much better team and a deeper rotation. Denver’s team also has more playing experience than Detroit’s.
The Pistons have yet to win on the road this season. It’s hard for me to see them getting that first victory against this Denver team that has players who can step up and help them win games without Jokic. Give me the home team to pick up the win.
Prediction: Denver Nuggets
The Pistons are 4-6 ATS in their last 10 games played against the Nuggets. Detroit is also 4-6 ATS in their last 10 games played in Denver.
Detroit Pistons ATS trends:
Denver Nuggets ATS trends:
Both teams will be without their best players. But Detroit playing without Cade Cunningham is worse than Denver without Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets have a much better team and have much more depth than the Pistons.
Detroit has the second-worst scoring defense in the NBA at 118.6 points per game allowed. Although the Nuggets are 13th in scoring this season, they have the likes of Bones Hyland and Michael Porter Jr. who can light up the scoreboards.
Offensively, the Pistons are worse at 24th in the league in scoring and I’m not sure if they can keep up with the Nuggets here. I’m picking a double-digit win by Denver.
Prediction: Nuggets -8
The over is 5-4-1 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings between these two teams. The over is also 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings in Denver.
Detroit Pistons over/under trends:
Denver Nuggets over/under trends:
Both teams are missing their best players in Cunningham and Jokic while Jamal Murray is listed as day-to-day. Because of those, I was tempted to go pick the under for a while.
But the Pistons are averaging only 99.9 possessions per 48 minutes while the Nuggets are notching 99.6 possessions per 48 minutes. Neither team plays at a slow pace and both teams have their defensive issues.
The Pistons are allowing 117 points per game this season and are letting opponents shoot 47% against them. The Nuggets are below the Top half of the league as far as scoring defense is concerned. Denver is allowing 113.9 points per game this season.
Detroit has conceded at least 121 points four times in their last 7 games played including 265 points in their last two outings. Meanwhile, the Nuggets have scored 120+ points four times in their last 8 games played. Give me these teams to hit the over.
